Because of the Covid-19 crisis, NAREE leaders have moved the annual conference in Miami from June to September and started a series of video meetings online under the direction NAREE President Catie Dixon, Bisnow Managing Editor.

How to Stand Out and Avoid Sensationalism
Eileen Woods used to line up cover stories for the Boston Globe’s Sunday real estate section three months in advance. Now, building on the ever-shifting foundation of coronavirus, the farthest the newspaper’s real estate editor can see into the future is six to seven weeks.
That’s longer than many journalists can fathom right now, during a pandemic that has upended government, the U.S. economy and large segments of the real estate business – along with the already-ailing newspaper industry.
During a May 7 NAREE virtual roundtable, Woods joined other editors and reporters in a discussion about tossed-out editorial calendars and creative approaches to a ubiquitous story.

Reporters and editors who have been stuck in the throes of covering the coronavirus pandemic while working from home need to be alert about burnout, a panel of experts said during NAREE’s most recent webinar in April.
Titled “How to Do Our Jobs in a Changed World" and moderated by NAREE President and Bisnow’s Catie Dixon, it hosted panelists Dion Haynes, Washington Post real estate editor and NAREE 2018 president; Stefanos Chen, New York Times reporter and NAREE member; Beth DeCarbo, Wall Street Journal columnist; NAREE chairman of the board; and Steve Brown, Dallas Morning News real estate editor and NAREE 2016 president and Jeff Collins, Orange County Register and NAREE Vice President.

NAREE, has announced a new award for its 70th Annual Real Estate Journalism Competition — the Kenneth R. Harney Award for Best Real Estate Consumer Education Reporting. The award winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and a certificate of excellence. The winner also will be invited to speak about the award-winning entry at NAREE’s Annual Real Estate Conference in Miami as NAREE’s guest. NAREE’s Miami 2020 conference will run June 24 to 27 at the Kimpton Epic Hotel.

Registration is open to journalists covering commercial and residential real estate and industry communicators. Conferees will hear about future trends in affordable housing, mixed use and office environments and can compare data analytics from economists, industry analysts, developers, builders, brokers and others in panel sessions moderated by NAREE’s award-winning media leaders.

NAREE’s new president is Beth DeCarbo of the Wall Street Journal. DeCarbo has been an editor of the Mansion section since its launch in 2012. She has worked for the Journal for 12 years. DeCarbo and her team have won several NAREE journalism awards in recent years. She previously served as NAREE’s 2018 vice president and organized NAREE University at the NAREE 52nd annual conference in Las Vegas last June.
