The National Association of Real Estate Editors - NAREE - is a network of reporters, writers, columnists, producers, and editors founded in 1929.

Celebrating 95 years of service, NAREE helps members advance their careers as staffers and freelancers for independent digital, print, and broadcast news outlets. Our members cover commercial and residential real estate including luxury and affordable housing, multifamily and mixed use, green building and sustainable urban and suburban design, mortgage, finance, investments and capital markets, as well as government housing policy and hospitality real estate.

NAREE produces a newsworthy annual conference each June with professional development and networking opportunities.

NAREE University in-person and NAREE U virtual professional development programs are peer-based with award winners invited to share back stories and tips to up your game.

The annual journalism competition for bona fide media honors excellence in journalism in the broad field of real estate. Entry deadline is March 1. Entry portal opens February 1. Awards are presented at NAREE’s annual conference each June.


Meetings

NAREE members meet in different US cities with real estate trends stories to tell.

NAREE's next Conference, our 59th annual, #NAREE2025 will be headquartered at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans’s historic French Quarter, Monday June 16, 2025 beginning at 1 PM and concluding Thursday morning, June 19, 2025.

#NAREE2024 was held June 18-21, 2024 at the Hyatt Regency on the downtown riverfront in Austin, Texas.

#NAREE2023 was held June 6-9 at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip.

#NARE2022 was held October 11-14 at the Westin Buckhead Atlanta.

#NAREE2021, the was held December 7-9 at the Epic Kimpton on the Miami River where it meets Biscayne Bay.

#NAREE2020 was held virtually Dec. 9-10 due to the Pandemic.

Whether meeting in person or virtually, NAREE leaders put together panels featuring real estate newsmakers and trendsetters to discuss the issues of the day and to answer reporter questions on breaking stories, innovation, disruptors and and more. NAREE University peer-to-peer professional development sessions are also scheduled on most days of the conference. NAREE’s journalism award are presented at the annual conference as well.

When feasible, NAREE strives to maintain a presence at industry meetings covered by members. Suites, receptions and panels are among the events NAREE has held in the last few years at the International Builders’ Show.

Awards

- NAREE Lifetime Achievement Award - Board members may nominate candidates, not always annually, who are career real estate journalists who have fostered the profession through outstanding achievement as real estate writers, reporters, columnists and/or editors coupled with exceptional, professional and personal leadership service in advancing the field.

NAREE 2018 President Dion Haynes, Washington Post Real Estate Editor initiated this award in 2017.

NAREE's inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to columnist Ken Harney of the Washington Post Writers Group in November of 2017. Ken served as NAREE's 2008 president, co-chaired NAREE's 2005 DC conference, and chaired NAREE's 2009 DC conference. He was a frequent conference advisor and moderator and also mentored many NAREE members over the years. Ken won more than two dozen NAREE Journalism Competition Awards, wrote two real estate books, and hosted a weekly real estate TV show. 

In 2019, NAREE's Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Steve Brown, Dallas Morning News real estate editor and NAREE 2016 president. Steve chaired NAREE's Dallas conference in 2009 and continues to serve as a conference advisor. Each year he moderates NAREE's economic forecast panel and often moderates other panels as well. Steve started with the Dallas Morning News more than 40 years ago. He is a highly respected editor and prolific writer. Steve received his award from NAREE 2019 president Beth DeCarbo, Wall Street Journal, at the Austin Conference after being nominated by Texas journalists Ralph Bivins, Realty News Report, Katherine Feser, Houston Chronicle and Shonda Novak, Austin American-Stateman.

NAREE Sterling Award - Begun in 2017, NAREE's first Sterling Award was given to NAREE 2005 President, Sue Doerfler, for 25 years of continuous service to the organization. Sue worked for the Arizona Republic for more than two decades as a reporter and had her own TV show there as well. At the time of the award, she had chaired NAREE's Meet the Press for more than 20 years and won numerous NAREE Journalism Competition Awards. Sue has continued to chair Meet the Press through 2024, so she has now chaired MTP for more than 25 years.

NAREE President's Awards - Each year, NAREE's President may honor outstanding NAREE volunteers for their leadership and service in appreciation for their time and expertise in assisting with NAREE's Annual Conference and myriad programs.

(Full-time, working journalists only)
Active members shall have as their principal occupation independent reporting, transmitting or editing of news, features and columns about real estate and/or housing for news media independent of sponsoring organizations, advertising control, trade associations, lobby groups and are not produced in concert with real estate companies, building companies, developers, architects, land planners or any company involved in the broad field of real estate or governmental entities. (Principal occupation means more than 50 percent of their time.) Membership is open to eligible digital, print and broadcast journalists. Join here.

Associate Members
(Writers for special interest publications and communications professionals)

Associate members are professional writers who do not qualify as full-time journalists for independent print or broadcast media or are working as communications specialists who write or disseminate information for a limited audience or for real estate-related business. 

Writers and communicators for special interest information outlets and marketplaces and/or non-news divisions of media parent companies include:

• Writers, editors, producers, bloggers, columnists and/or content providers for trade association affiliated publications, real estate industry special interest publications and sponsoring organizations.

• Publishers, authors, columnists and bloggers and those who write for independent news outlets in the news division – part-time – as a complement to their industry-related jobs.

• Communications professionals – publicists, marketing directors and consultants who disseminate information on behalf of real estate-related business interests. Join here.
