Meet NAREE’s 2022 Board of Directors

Members of the National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) have a new board of directors.

NAREE’s new president is Eileen McEleney Woods, editor of the Boston Globe’s Sunday real estate section, Address and its companion e-newsletter. She is also the editor of realestateboston.com. Woods previously served as NAREE vice president and headed up NAREE University, and its virtual companion, NU Live. Both are peer-to-peer professional development programs covering a range of topics from tools to work on social justice issues in real estate to how to increase online readership by making real estate news more accessible to people with disabilities. She joined the Globe as an editor in 1999 and is graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

NAREE’s new board members were installed in Miami at NAREE’s election meeting on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021 at the Kimpton Epic Hotel.

2021 president Jeff Collins of the Orange County Register is now board chair. He has been with the Orange County Register since 1990 covering market booms and busts and all aspects of the real estate industry for more than a decade. Collins has also served as head of NAREE University and held several board positions. He earned a master’s degree from the USC School of Journalism.

Jason Hidalgo, Reno Gazette-Journal is NAREE’s new vice president. An award-winning reporter and Fulbright Scholar, Hidalgo has served on the board as secretary and treasurer. He covers real estate, economic development, renewable energy, and technology.

NAREE’s 2021 second vice president is Jim Lapides of National MultifamilyHousing Council (NMHC). Lapides has served on the board of directors previously and has held positions at the American Society of Landscape Architects and the National Association of Home Builders. He has an MA from Johns Hopkins University. 

Katherine Clarke was elected as NAREE treasurer. Clarke is a real estate reporter at the Wall Street Journal. She is a graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Trinity College Dublin. Clarke, a native of Northern Ireland, is writing a book on New York real estate. 

Tony Wilbert, senior news writer at CoStar News, is NAREE’s 2022 Secretary. Based in Atlanta, Wilbert covers commercial real estate in that market and U.S. real estate investors and developers active in the United Kingdom. Wilbert has covered commercial real estate as a staff writer for several newspapers including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Savannah Morning News and Atlanta Business Chronicle. He also served as editor-in-chief of National Real Estate Investor.

NAREE Active Directors installed in Miami include John Gittelsohn, a real estate reporter for Bloomberg News based in Los Angeles. Gittelsohn has broken stories on commercial mortgage defaults, loan sales, international real estate, and the widening inequality in home mortgage. He earned a BA at Stanford and an MS in journalism from Columbia.

Shonda Novak, Austin American-Statesman reporter, was also elected as an active board member at-large. She served as NAREE 2015 president and worked on NAREE’s 2019 Austin Conference, as well as serving in other leadership positions. A University of Texas graduate, Novak has been on the real estate beat in Austin for more than 20 years and has been a staffer at three other dailies in her journalism career.

Joining the 2022 NAREE Board as an associate director is Paul Lopez is senior vice president of communications and public affairs at the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, DC. He holds BA in liberal arts from St. John's College and attended Vermont Law School.

2021 Chair Catie Dixon, Bisnow, remains on the board as an active at-large member for 2022. She was NAREE president in 2020. Also continuing to serve on the board as active directors are Beth DeCarbo, freelance writer and NAREE 2019 president; Jeff Ostrowski, Bankrate; Eli Segall, Las Vegas Review-Journal; and Cameron Sperance, Skift.

Ginny Walker, KBS Realty Advisors, continues to serve as an associate director at-large.

On January 12, Aldo Svaldi, Denver Post was appointed to the board to serve as an at-large director to fill a vacancy left when Katherine Clarke became Treasurer. Svaldi has worked at the Denver Post since 2000. He covers residential real estate, economic development and the Colorado economy. He holds an MA in Journalism from the University of Missouri.
